I'm James O'Connor, Documentary Filmmaker & Producer

I’m the filmmaker behind James Patrick Photography.

For more than 6 years, I’ve been helping organisations tell their stories through documentary and corporate video production.

Most of the people I work with are trying to communicate something that matters. It might be the impact of a community program, the story behind an organisation, or a project that’s making a real difference.

My job is to find the story, shape it into something people connect with and make the production process as straightforward as possible.

My Story

I’ve always been drawn to real stories. The kind that reveals something about people, communities and the work that’s happening behind the scenes.

Over the years, that interest has taken me in many different directions.

I’ve filmed community projects, environmental initiatives, cultural stories, corporate productions and documentaries for organisations across New South Wales and regional Australia.

Every project has been different, but they’ve all had one thing in common: helping people understand why something matters.

Some of that work has gone on to become award-winning documentaries, including Mining the Blue Mountains, Bird’s Robe: This Is Family, and The Legacy of Wollongong Golf Club. Seeing those films recognised at film festivals has been rewarding, but what stays with me are the people I’ve met and the stories they’ve trusted me to tell.

How I Work

Some of the most rewarding projects I’ve worked on have started with a conversation and a simple idea.

They usually know what they want to achieve. They want to share the impact of a program, document an important project or tell the story behind their organisation. What they don’t always have is a clear plan for getting there.

That’s where I come in.

I help shape the story, work through the creative direction and guide the project from beginning to end. I call it Reverse Project Management because instead of expecting you to manage the production, I manage the process for you.

You’ll work directly with me from our first conversation through to the final edit. There are no account managers or layers of communication.

Every project starts the same way. We sit down, talk through the purpose of the film and work out what story needs to be told. Once that’s clear, the filming becomes much easier.
